A new era in Baylor football was ushered in Nov. 28, 2007, when Art Briles was introduced as the Bears' 25th head coach. A native Texan who has spent his entire life in the Lone Star state, Briles came to Waco following a highly successful five-year tenure as head coach at the University of Houston where he guided the Cougars to four bowl games and a 34-28 record.

NCAA committee approves 34 bowl games

The NCAA has approved applications for 34 football bowl games for 2008, including 32 existing bowls and two new games in Washington, D.C., and St. Petersburg, Fla. The NCAA Postseason Football Licensing Subcommittee on Wednesday also turned down a request for a proposed Rocky Mountain Bowl in Salt Lake City. The new bowl games for next season will be the Congressional Bowl in the nation's capital and the St. Petersburg Bowl.

Licenses were renewed for the Allstate Sugar, AT&T Cotton, AutoZone Liberty, BCS National Championship, Bell Helicopter Armed Forces, Brut Sun, Capital One, Champs Sports, Chick-fil-A, Emerald, Fed Ex Orange, Gaylord Hotels Music City, GMAC, Roady's Humanitarian, Insight, International, Konica Minolta Gator, Meineke Car Care, Motor City, New Mexico, Outback, Pacific Life Holiday, Papajohns.com, PetroSun Independence, Pioneer Las Vegas, R+L Carriers New Orleans, Rose, San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia, Sheraton Hawaii, Texas, Tostitos Fiesta and Valero Alamo bowls.

News: Qwest Rocky Mountain Showdown moving to Sunday

This fall's Qwest Rocky Mountain Showdown between the University of Colorado and Colorado State University has been moved back a day to Sunday, Aug. 31, to both accommodate a national television audience and provide some relief for emergency service personnel working the Democratic National Convention, officials at both schools announced Wednesday.

News: NCAA Denies Appeal By Cincy QB For Another Year

-The NCAA won't reconsider its decision to deny former Cincinnati quarterback Ben Mauk another year of eligibility. The NCAA initially turned downed Mauk's request for a sixth year of eligibility in February. But Mauk made a new appeal on grounds that he was hurt as a freshman at Wake Forest when he sat out as a redshirt. Mauk missed all but one game in 2006 at Wake Forest with a shoulder injury. He transferred to Cincinnati and led the Bearcats to 10 victories last season.
